Career Start-Up

Van Dyke started his stand-up comedy career while still a high school student and quickly gained experience in nightclubs and strip spots. He joined the US Air Force’s Tops in Blue touring performance group in the middle of the 1950s, performing at military installations all over the world. Van Dyke later worked at Terre Haute, Indiana’s WTHI-TV.

Career in Television

In 1962, Van Dyke began portraying Stacey Petrie on his brother’s comedy “The Dick Van Dyke Show,” landing his first significant television role. He made an appearance in a “GE True” anthology episode that same year. Van Dyke also had appearances on several variety shows, such as “The Judy Garland Show,” on which he was a regular from 1963 to 1964, “The Ed Sullivan Show,” “The Andy Williams Show,” “The Garry Moore Show,” and “The Ed Sullivan Show.” In the NBC fantasy sitcom “My Mother the Car,” which ran from 1965 to 1966, he played attorney Dave Crabtree in his first major acting role.

The heavily mocked program was ultimately canceled after one season. From 1967 to 1968, Van Dyke acted in the brief-lived sitcom “Accidental Family.” In the following years, he made appearances on a variety of television programs, including “Good Morning World,” “Gomer Pyle-USMC,” “Love, American Style,” and “The Mary Tyler Moore Show.” In addition, he co-starred with Andy Griffith in the brief-lived sitcom “Headmaster” in 1970, and at the end of the decade, he appeared in another brief-lived sitcom, “13 Queens Boulevard.”

Movie Career

In 1963, Van Dyke made his film acting debut in three different productions: “The Courtship of Eddie’s Father,” “Palm Springs Weekend,” and “McLintock,” a Western comedy. He appeared in the Ricky Nelson comedy “Love & Kisses” two years later. The next role for Van Dyke was the alcoholic brother-in-law of Kansas preacher Andy Griffith’s main character in the 1969 comedy “Angel in My Pocket.”

After this, he didn’t make many more cinematic appearances. Grandpa Charles Baker was one of his few parts in the direct-to-video animated holiday movie “Annabelle’s Wish,” which he voiced.

Personal Death and Life

Carol Johnson married Van Dyke as his first wife in 1957. Ronald, Kelly Jean, and Jerri Lynn were their three offspring. In the end, the couple divorced in 1974. Van Dyke married Shirley Ann Jones three years later, and they remained together until his death. Van Dyke suffered serious injuries in an automobile accident that occurred in 2016. He died of heart failure at his property in January 2018. Age-wise, he was 86.
