American actor and producer Tom Cruise has a $600 million fortune. Tom Cruise has been in a number of big-budget films over the past three decades and is currently regarded as one of Hollywood’s biggest actors. He is also among the world’s highest-paid and wealthiest celebrities. Tom Cruise films have raked in $9.5 billion at the worldwide box office as of this writing.
Interestingly, none of Tom’s movies failed to generate over $1 billion over the majority of his career. Prior to June 2022, “Mission: Impossible – Fallout,” which earned $800 million worldwide, was his highest-grossing film of all time. After the weekend of June 25–26, 2022, Tom finally reached the billion dollar milestone courtesy to “Top Gun: Maverick.”
On July 3, 1962, Thomas Cruise Mapother IV was born in Syracuse, New York. His mother was a special education teacher, and his father, who bears his name, was an electrical engineer. The three sisters of Tom. William Mapother, his first cousin, eventually went on to become an actor and has worked on several productions with Tom. After his father accepted a position with the Canadian Armed Forces, Tom Cruise spent part of his early years travelling around the country. Later on, Tom would assert that his father had been a bully who had beaten him and his siblings. In 14 years, he attended 15 schools.
Tom didn’t always envision himself as an actor. He took theatrical classes in middle school, although he was more of a jock at that time. After being removed from the wrestling team due to a knee injury, he switched to acting in high school. After putting in a lot of effort in the drama club, Cruise was swiftly cast as the lead in their performance of Guys and Dolls. Tom remained uninterested despite receiving praise and support for his acting abilities. In fact, he briefly attended the St. Francis Seminary in Cincinnati with the intention of pursuing a career as a Franciscan priest. He was dismissed from the seminary because of his drinking.
Tom Cruise earned $2 million for the 1986 film “Top Gun,” as we just mentioned. That amounts to roughly $5.4 million now when inflation has been taken into account. Unbelievably, $2 million was 13% of Top Gun’s $15 million budget. Producers Jerry Bruckheimer and Don Simpson were worried when the Tom Cruise-starring film “Legend” tanked at the box office while Top Gun was in production. Fortunately, Top Gun was a huge success and ended up being the most profitable film of 1986, earning $360 million.
Three decades later, we arrive in 2018 or 2019. A Top Gun sequel was finally made after many years of fan rumors, whispers, and expectations, in large part due to producer David Ellison, son of Skydance founder Larry Ellison. A Top Gun sequel was the first film David Ellison intended to make after launching Skydance in 2006—he was a pilot himself and a passionate Top Gun fan growing up. When everything came together, Skydance contributed 25% of the movie’s estimated $200 million budget.
The two films that Tom has earned the most money from are War of the Worlds (2005) and Mission Impossible 2 (2000). He made $100 million from EVERY film he made thanks to the profitable backend points. Tom Cruise is third on a list of the ten actors with the highest salaries ever (for a single film). After Bruce Willis’ $105 million Sixth Sense salary and Keanu Reeves’ $156 million Matrix payday, his previously stated $100 million paychecks rank third and fourth in terms of size.
