John Oliver, the well-renowned host of the HBO series Last Week Tonight with John Oliver, returned from a brief Emmys-timed break at the Last week tonight bureau. The basis of the talk was on the news of President Trump’s appointing Amy Coney Barrett in the position of the late Ruth Bader Ginsburg on the Supreme Court right before the elections. “Trump is about to replace a liberal icon with an extremely conservative justice that has been called the woman Antonin Scalia, and she can serve for a long time,” Oliver said. “Amy Coney Barrett is only 48, and I know I make 43 looks like 76, but trust me, it is Young for a Supreme Court judge.
Centre-right views: John Oliver on Amy Coney Barrett’s nomination
“If, and almost certainly when, Barrett does confirm to the Supreme Court, the impact could be disastrous,” the HBO host continued the talk by highlighting in the recent years from keeping the affordable care law to preserving DACA to moving further to the restrictive abortion law. If we take everything to court, there is no way or hope that Conservatives will choose to respect the precedent they set by refusing even to consider Merrick Garland in an election year.
Oliver later proposed that there is the justification of Senator Mitt Romneyas to why he supports the candidate of Trump Barrett. “He is a Republican senator who admits to having blocked confirmation of justice not only in an election year but for an entire presidential term. Romney continued that he recognizes that we may have a tribunal that has more of a conservative bent than it has in the last few decades. He continued “but my liberal friends have, over the decades, become very accustomed to having a liberal tribunal, and it’s not written in the stars.” He suggested, “it is also appropriate for a nation that is, if you will, centre-right, to have a tribunal that reflects centre-right views.”
Winner of the presidential election: John Oliver on Amy Coney Barrett’s nomination
Well, Oliver was indeed upset and said “Put aside the idea that a court that emptied the Voting Rights Act is a ‘liberal court’.” he questioned that since when has the nation been naturally centre-right? By highlighting few records, Oliver stated that 47% of Americans state they align with the Democratic Party than 42% Republicans. She further said, “What’s more, poll after poll has shown Americans support the right to abortion, with support from Roe vs Wade reaching record levels.” As a substantial majority of the public has been supporting Medicare-for-All Oliver states that a significant majority of around 59% people say that the winner of this presidential election should be the one who chooses as Ginsburg’s successor.
Concluding the talk: John Oliver on Amy Coney Barrett’s nomination
Oliver explained in Last Week tonight that it has been a very dark week for many for sure and the Supreme Court is to lurch to the right of the upcoming future. The things do seem hopeless for now because the situation is HOPELESS, which should be understood. The talk continued from there to Oliver continuing “the deeply undemocratic nature of America’s institutions.” We got to see that the last week tonight then played a few videos of Republican senators. They did claim to have the mandate to do what they are doing with Amy Coney Barrett.
